Reducing Epoxy Spot Defects

A laminates company was experiencing a large increase in the number of epoxy spots left on the finished product after the manufacturing process—so it turned to Six Sigma problem solving. After defining and analyzing the process, an improvement team uncovered two key causes of the problem: inconsistency among operators in how thoroughly they cleaned their hands after handling materials and inconsistency in hand-cleaning methods. After the process was standardized, the company achieved better quality and realized annual savings of $320,000.
